Dr. Dean Xerras

Dean Xerras, MD, Medical Director at Chelsea HealthCare Center, has been named the 2018 DGIM Balint Scholar. As Balint Scholar, in April Dr. Xerras will attend “Reflection and Resiliency”, a week-long HMS CME Course held in Orvieto, Italy, and directed by Karen Carlson, MD. Upon returning from the course, Dr. Xerras will co-lead a Balint group within DGIM. More details on that group will be available in the future.

Ryan Schwarz, MD, MBA, spearheaded efforts to write Practitioner Expertise to Optimize Community Health Systems, a report aiming to offer best practice design principles for Community Health Worker (CHW) programmatic implementation. The report was the results of a collaborative effort between a collection of organizations with experience developing CHW programs.

Hemal N. Sampat, MD, Rebecca Berger, MD, and Farrin A. Manian, MD, MPH, all of the Hospital Medicine Unit, wrote When should I transfuse a patient who has anemia?, which was featured in the December edition of The Hospitalist.

In October, residents, fellows, and faculty from across DGIM joined colleagues from the Endocrine Division for a “Paired Social” event recognizing Women in Medicine. Attendees enjoyed meeting colleagues whose names the knew from shared patients, but never actually met. DGIM Associate Chief Nancy Rigotti, MD, and Senior Resident Ada Amobi, MD, organized the event.

On December 18, 2017, many DGIM members were part of a group at MGH that came together in opposition of reports of a CDC ban on the use seven words.
