DGIM Generally Speaking - Winter 2018

Opening Lines

The first issue of Generally Speaking in 2018 celebrates all things new.

Spotlight on Education: Jessica Zeidman — Education in a Community Health Center

Mass General's community health centers provide unique settings for ambulatory education that are highly sought after by MGH residents and Harvard medical students. Jessica Zeidman, MD, is committed to continuing this high-quality learning experience.

Coaching Corner: Catching up with DGIM Coaching Expert Kerri Palamara McGrath

Faculty Coaching is one of the many ways the DGIM works to help our faculty achieve personal and professional fulfillment. Mary McNaughton Collins, Director, DGIM Faculty and Staff Career and Professional Development, recently touched base with Kerri Palamara McGrath, MD, DGIM’s coaching expert, to discuss the ongoing coaching initiatives in DGIM and what’s on the horizon.

Pages: Notes From the DGIM Writer in Residence

Audrey Provenzano, MD, has been thinking about an aspect of the recently passed tax laws which will likely affect our patients’ health—and should make us more alert to a too-often unrecognized condition.

Culinary Literacy Corner: Winter Hibernation — Red Lentil Soup

Now that we’ve made it through the holidays, the mindset is ripe (haha) for eating healthy in the new year. A great family of foods to choose from is legumes. Legumes are a good source of protein and fiber, commonly consumed in many cultures, and recommended in the extreme of diets including low fat and low carb!

Bit of Balint

How can we listen to our patients? We all want to be good listeners because we know that making the right diagnosis requires it. But competing demands make it difficult to hear a patient’s story.

Happiness Hero Winter 2018 — Denisa Gace

The Division of General Internal Medicine’s Hospital Medicine Unit (HMU) continues its efforts to spread smiles throughout MGH! This winter, we have announced our latest Happiness Hero – Dr. Denisa Gace!

Ode to Scribble

Some practices in DGIM have piloted the use of Scribble, a scribing solution that lessens the administrative burden on providers, allowing them more time to care for patients. One DGIM Physician, David Harrison, MD, was so grateful for his virtual scribe that he decided to write them this cheery poem.

2017 DGIM Promotions

Congratulations to all the DGIM faculty members who received promotions at either MGH or HMS during 2017! It was a successful year with 13 Faculty earning HMS promotions and 28 receiving MGH promotions.
